This past weekend members from Campbell River SAR joined Search and Rescue volunteers from a dozen other SAR groups throughout Vancouver Island at a tracking course hosted in Port Alberni.
This course focused on the fundamentals of tracking, with an emphasis on following a subject step-by-step. This develops the solid “power base” of observation and reasoning needed to move on in tracking. Even a single course makes our members better searchers and those who continue on become very valuable resources when searching for missing individuals in the field.
We are very proud of how all of our members performed on the course, but special congratulations are warranted for Mike Brazier. After 40 hours of training, Mike has been awarded Track Aware certification. On future courses, Mike will be training in advanced tracking techniques focusing on high urgency searches, sign cutting and other valuable skills directly applicable to the sorts of searches we do.
Thanks to the British Columbia Tracking Association for providing an engaging, informative and valuable course to our members, and thanks to the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad for hosting us in their fantastic search hall.
